Chance The Rapper took home his first Grammy award on Sunday for Best New Artist and his performance of “No Problem” with 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne.
The 23-year-old rapper from Chicago is nominated for seven Grammys. Earlier this year, he released his “Coloring Book” project and had a one-day festival on the South Side in September.
“Glory be to God. I claim the victory in the name of the Lord,” Chance said in his acceptance speech. He also thanked his mother and father, as well as his on-again, off-again girlfriend Kirsten Corley and their 16-month-old daughter, and last not but not least, the city of Chicago.
“I just want to say thank you to my team for being here. (Expletive) this is crazy. Thank God for this. Damn, I’m shaking, this is crazy. Thank you everybody for supporting me… I love my family, I love God and I love music. Thank you guys,” Chance stated, stunned by everything happening around him at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Chance was also nominated for rap/sung performance (“Ultralight Beam”); rap album (“Coloring Book”); and rap song for “Famous,” “Ultralight Beam” and “No Problem.”
Drake won the rap/sung performance category for “Hotline Bling,” which also won for best rap song.
