The 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards took place on Monday night at the Brooklyn Museum. Household names like Jennifer Lopez and Mattel’s Barbie (yes, the doll) won big awards like the Fashion Icon Award and the Board of Directors’ Tribute, respectively.

Among the winners in the competitive categroies were Brandon Maxwell and Rick Owens. In addition, Carine Roitfeld, Eileen Fisher, Lynn Yaeger, Sarah Burton and Bob Mackie left with honorary awards of their own to commemorate their contributions to the fashion industry.

The event was cosponsored by Econyl, The Standard and Maestro Dobel Tequila and hosted attendees like A$AP Ferg, Virgil Abloh, Gigi Hadid and Shailene Woodley.

During her acceptance speech, Lopez thanked fashion moguls such as Oscar de la Renta, Versace and Gucci, saying that they “allowed me to get into their designs. To say I was a kid in a candy store was an understatement. And slowly, as curves began to be embraced, the girl who wanted to combine street style with couture began to blossom, and I’m grateful to all of you for that.”

Maxwell, who closely works with Lady Gaga as her fashion director, walked onto stage in a stupor as he was unprepared to win the award for womenswear. He proceeded to give an eloquent speech about the hard and gritty work that goes on behind the scenes when designing looks. He extended his thanks onto Instagram where he thanked the CFDA and elaborated on personal struggles that he had to overcome in order to achieve his success.
