Luigi Mangione has reportedly retained Harvey Weinstein’s prison consultant, Craig Rothfield, who previously spent time in prison for white-collage crimes and now claims to be a “top consultant.”

Mangione, who is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on December 4, has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Rothfeld has been Weinstein’s authorized legal healthcare representative in New York for years.

Weinstein, 72, has been hospitalized multiple times in the last few months, with problems relating to heart surgery, diabetes, spinal stenosis and cancer. His spokesperson, Judy Engelmayer, claimed that Weinstein has not received proper medical attention in prison, stating, “Mr. Weinstein, who is suffering from a number of illnesses, including leukemia, has been deprived the medical attention that someone in his medical state deserves, prisoner or not.”

Weinstein was convicted of sexual abuse in multiple cases in 2020 and 2022. Rothfeld told NBC in a 2020 interview following Weinstein’s conviction, “Often, I tell [my clients] you’re going into a Byzantine black hole.”

He further shared, “I’m talking to [Weinstein] about the first 90 days…They’re very dark. They’re very uncomfortable because you’re on buses in handcuffs and leg shackles. You can’t get packages. It’s very scary. What it will be like for him is — you’re powerless.”

The New York Court of Appeals overturned Weinstein’s New York rape convictions on April 25, 2024, and ordered a retrial on the basis of procedural errors.

Mangione’s trial has been attended by several dozen young women, which has prompted a campaign characterizing interest in the trial as a “teen-girl obsession” akin to true crime and propelled by Mangione’s physical appearance. In response to the dismissive attitude towards public interest in Mangione’s case, many internet users have pointed out the common trend of young women’s interests being subjected to heavy criticism. Many further suggested that news reports are intentionally degrading the public interest to distract from the conversation Mangione has forefronted regarding healthcare inequality.

Mangione is being held at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center and is rumored to be on the same floor as rap mogul Sean Combs, who awaits trial for sex trafficking and racketeering, among other charges.
