After the disappointing premiere of Disney’s newly released film The Marvels starring Brie Larson, Disney CEO Bob Iger released a statement claiming that the poor box office was due to a “lack of supervision” while filming and “too many sequels.”
He later clarified that that does not mean that Disney won’t make more Marvel movies, only that the company will be more hesitant about the sequels that they will be green-lighting in the future.
While speaking to CNBC over the summer, Iger stated that he believes that the frequent additions to the Disney+ streaming site have diluted the content pool that The Marvels fell into and made the release less exciting.
The Marvels was released in November and suffered disappointing revenue numbers.
The opening weekend of The Marvels did $47 million at the box office but fell closer to $10 million the next weekend. Given the movie’s budget of $276 million, the film is considered a giant failure.
The production of the movie was done primarily when COVID protocols were at their height, which Iger has blamed for the “lack of supervision” while on set.
Film star Iman Vellani said she’s not focused on the box office.
