News of Celine Dion’s death spread across social media sites over the weekend, following two false stories from leading news organizations appeared on Facebook Apps.
A false CNN report claimed that Dion, 45, had died in a plane crash: "Hollywood Breaking News – R.I.P Celine Dion At about 11 a.m. ET on Sunday, Celine Dion died in a plane crash," the CNN version read. "The culprit for the story is Global Associated, aka Mediafetcher. 'Celine Dion presumed dead in private plane crash', Global claims that Celine died today at 'Denver Peak-Regional Airport."
A report claiming to be from Fox News, suggesting that the Canadian singer had died in a car accident: "Investigators have told reporters that Celine Dion lost control while driving a friend's vehicle on Interstate 80 and rolled the vehicle several times killing her instantly. The vehicle was believed to have been traveling at approximately 95 miles per hour in a 55mph zone at the time of the accident."
The faux news spread fast, leading the “My Heart Will Go On’s Singer” fans to take to Twitter to try to verify the devastating news they’d heard of her death.
Dion did not publicly comment on the death hoax, but she made an appearance on NBC’s Today show on Monday morning, which likely served to allay the fears of those who still thought the false reports were true. During her stop at Today, Dion performed two songs off her new album Loved Me Back to Life, which will be released Nov. 5.
