Celebrities Honor Martin Luther King, Jr. On National Holiday

January 18, 2021, Americans observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Public figures, like Barack Obama, Viola Davis, and more took to social media to honor the life of Dr. King. Through sharing quotes, speeches, and music, these celebrities shared how they are honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. today.

Barack Obama shared a post to Instagram, stating “On #MLKDay, we celebrate his life but we’re also called to live out his values through service of our own.” He continued to share a list containing ways his followers can get involved in community service in honor of Dr. King.

Viola Davis shared a video montage of Dr. King, captioning it: “THIS is legacy!! A gift. This is why we celebrate this day”

Lady Gaga shared an inspiring speech she made over the weekend while accepting an award for her activism from the Beloved Community. “In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King and the Beloved Community…”

Dionne Warwick took to twitter to share a few words in memory of Dr. King, calling on her followers to listen to and follow what he preached. “Celebrating the legacy and birthday (Jan. 15) of the courageous, God-fearing Dr. King. How will you honor him today?”

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez provided her followers with a list of resources in which they could properly study King’s life and teachings.

Stacey Abrams reminded her followers that while they voted this past election with Dr. King’s legacy in mind, there is still work to be done. “By ensuring our voices were heard in the streets and at the ballot box, we renewed our fight to make the dream a reality. But the work continues.”

Hamilton shared a video from 2018 of students performing a song in memory of Dr. King.

Martin Luther King Jr’s son shared a photo of them on Instagram. “My father’s dream is not just a speech he gave or an idyllic view of what could be. My father’s dream is something we must all choose each and every day to work towards. Together, we are all my father’s legacy.”
