August 1 is National Girlfriend Day, a day when people — celebrities and non-celebrities alike — take to social media to share with their audiences how much their significant other means to them.
According to Days of the Year, Girlfriend Day was first celebrated by Mistress Susan back in 2004 as a means of allowing women to illustrate their friendship with each other. Chase’s event calendar has recognized the holiday since September 2005.
Of course, many have taken to social media to express how much their girlfriend has enriched their lives. Others, however, are commemorating their close friendships as per the holiday’s original meaning:
Not everyone will have a girlfriend to celebrate with today or will want to showcase her on social media. There’s nothing wrong with that, and some took to Twitter to join the festivities in a more humorous way or by admiring nature.
