Celebrities Celebrate Galentine’s Day, Leslie Knope’s Day For “Ladies Celebrating Ladies”

Today marks February 13, the day before Valentine’s Day, and a day that has come to be known as Galentine’s Day in the United States. Beginning with a 2010 episode of Amy Poehler‘s Parks and Recreation, Galentine’s Day has become a national phenomenon, with more stores and people celebrating the holiday every year.

What’s Galentine’s Day, you ask? Well, “only the best day of the year,” according to Poehler’s Leslie Knope. It’s all about “ladies celebrating ladies.” The episode (aptly titled “Galentine’s Day”) sparked a movement that encouraged women to celebrate all the different kinds of love in their life, and especially the bond between female friends.

And celebrities have been taking advantage of the holiday as well. Actress Kate Walsh posted a sweet message on her Twitter account, thanking the “hardworking and talented women” she’s worked with. The post was accompanied by a collage of photos of Walsh and a number of fellow actresses, including Allison Janney and her former Grey’s Anatomy co-stars Ellen Pompeo and Katherine Heigl.

Nancy Pelosi‘s daughter, Christine Pelosi, also took to the internet to praise the hardworking women in her life, and particularly her mother. Referencing Pelosi’s recent hand-clapping meme that went viral, Pelosi wrote: “shout out to all the moms bringing up gals with a hug, a look and a clap.”

Walsh and Pelosi are joined online by thousands of other women who are taking today to celebrate the fellow females in their lives. After all, as Leslie Knope would say, it’s “ovaries before brovaries!”
