Under the Dome, a series based on a Stephen King novel, tells the story of a small town in Maine which unexpectedly finds itself trapped within a mysterious force field. In the past, the network has teased that the show would come to an end after the third season, and now it would seem that her taunts are becoming a reality.
Two years ago, CBS adapted King’s bestselling novel into a television series and it quickly became a hit. But now it seems as if the struggle is over for the inhabitants. CBS Chairwoman Nina Tassler said in a statement announcing that the “Dome’s event storytelling and multi-platform business model,” as well as the sudden cancellation of the show would open the door for more original work from the network, such as Extant and Zoo, and that Dome will be “coming down as dramatically as it went up.”
The show revolves around a broad cast of characters and chronicles their struggles to deal with isolation, thinning resources and developing animosity between loyalties. The show stars Mike Vogel as Dale Barbara, an Iraq War veteran; Dean Norris as Big Jim, a town councilman; Rachelle Lefevre as an investigative journalist and Dale Barbara’s love interest.
The network also revealed that the story will wrap with two factions within the town engaging in one final conflict in which many will perish. One reason for the network prolonging the series for as long as it did could be due to the fact the it’s 2013 premier drew in 13.5 million viewers.
Rachel Lefevre took to Instagram to express her gratitude for getting three long seasons on the show saying “Chester Mill, population 0,” solidifying the foreboding hints left by the network about the finale.
The season finale is set to air Sept. 10.
