Catholic Leaders Across The World Condemn Trump’s Use Of ‘Infantile’ AI Image Of Himself As The Pope: ‘Pathological Megalomania’
Donald Trump sparked outrage among the Catholic community with an AI picture of himself as the pope.
Last Tuesday, following Pope Francis’ funeral, Trump – who is not Catholic – told news outlets that he would “like to be pope.” This comment prompted immediate backlash from Catholics and nonreligious individuals alike, who argue that even overlooking Trump’s not practicing the religion, the president has no business being appointed the next leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Roman Catholics.
On Friday, Trump fueled public outrage by posting an AI image of himself in a papal headdress and white cassock to TruthSocial. The picture was later reshared on the White House’s official X account.
The image immediately received backlash for being disrespectful.
Matteo Renzi, Italy’s former prime minister, was quick to shame Trump for the insensitive picture, writing on X, “This is an image that offends believers, insults institutions and shows that the leader of the right-wing world enjoys clowning around.”
In a Facebook post, respected Filipino Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David wrote, “Not funny, sir.”
When journalists asked his opinion, Cardinal Timothy Dolan responded, “Well, it wasn’t good.” Father Gerald Murray, a priest from the Archdiocese of New York, similarly responded, “Silly…you don’t do that.”
The Italian daily La Repubblica also condemned the “infantile” post and accused Trump of “pathological megalomania.”
The Vatican is still observing its official mourning period for Pope Francis, but the Roman Catholic community is days away from the conclave to begin the election for Francis’ successor.
