Casey Anthony Update: Lawyer Opens Up About Her Life Post Acquittal

Casey Anthony was acquitted of the murder of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee Anthony three years ago, but her lawyer says her life remains like that of a prisoner.

Casey Anthony’s Lawyer Maintains Her Innocence

Following Anthony’s acquittal by a 12-person jury on July 5, 2011, there was a public outcry that she'd gotten away with murder. After hearing both the prosecution and the defense team, the overall opinion of the public was that Anthony had killed her daughter. It was believed that the jury had gotten it wrong and/or that the prosecution had fumbled a sure conviction.

Reputable Florida lawyer Cheney Mason, who joined Anthony’s defense team – led by Jose Baez – pro bono, maintains his client’s innocence to this day, replying, “Oh, yes,” when asked if Anthony could look him in the eye and say she didn’t commit the crime for which she was to stand trial.

Mason added that when the prosecution presented the defense team with the prospect of a plea deal, Anthony rejected the idea outright. According to him, she was intent on proving herself innocent. "Casey got very angry about [the plea deals],” Mason told CNN. “She got very angry to hear talk about it. She didn't want to hear it. Casey would fight it 'til her last breath. She didn't kill her daughter."

Anthony's Life Post-Acquittal

Three years since her acquittal, Anthony lives a life of virtual imprisonment, says Mason, as persistent death threats give her cause to fear for her life. “She has to live constantly on guard. She can't go out in public," Mason said, adding that she works from home as "a housekeeper, clerk, secretary and stuff like that."

"I think Casey has a lot of world left to have to deal with. She hasn't been freed from her incarceration yet 'cause she can't go out,” Mason added. “She can't go to a beauty parlor, she can't go shopping to a department store, she can't go to a restaurant, she can't even go to McDonald's. She can't do anything."

Casey Anthony has stayed out of the spotlight over the last couple of years, declining to speak about her daughter’s death, the ensuing trial and her eventual acquittal. Mason, though he admits he hasn’t broached the subject with Anthony, whom he regards as family, believes that Anthony will eventually want to share her story.

"I do think she wants to speak out," Mason said. "I have never asked her that, but I know she has very strong feelings for what has happened to her. I also know she's very saddened by her loss and she will never forget her daughter Caylee, ever."
