Carrie Fisher Happy To Return To The ‘Star Wars’ Universe As Princess Leia

Carrie Fisher has only positive things to say about reprising her iconic role of Princess Leia in the forthcoming sequel, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Carrie Fisher On Star Wars

Fisher, who was 20 years old when the first Star Wars film came out in 1977, has returned to the part of Princess Leia aged 59. In the nearly 40 years that have passed, Leia has earned the title of General, which she’ll inhabit for the first time in The Force Awakens.

What does Fisher think of the character’s evolution? “It’s ridiculous. Ridiculous in a really good way,” Fisher told ABC News, adding that the film as a whole should live up to the expectations of diehard fans of the franchise.  “Please go to this film … you’ll really like it. I liked it and I’m strict.”

Fisher, who’s made more than a few comments about how she had to shed some weight for the movie, was happy to do it for the chance to once again play Leia. Not only has she embraced her notoriety for the role, she is also just glad to be working.

“I’ve been this character for 40 years, why would I not? Because I’m going to be associated with Princess Leia more? There is no ‘more,’ ” Fisher told the Wall Street Journal, adding, “And I’m a female working in show business, where, if you’re famous, you have a career until you’re 45, maybe. Maybe. And that’s about 15 people.”

In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Fisher is joined by former costars Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill, who have reprised the roles of Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, respectively. The Force Awakens also welcomes a number of newcomers to the franchise, including Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie and Adam Driver.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters Dec. 18.
