A joint funeral for Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds was held on Friday.
Fisher, who died last Tuesday, and her mother, who died one day after, were honored with a private funeral at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park Hollywood Hills.
Todd Fisher, Carrie’s younger brother, carried his sister’s ashes in an urn fashioned from a ceramic Prozac container, a nod to her very open struggle with bipolar disorder. This was the final example of Fisher’s fantastic wit and humor.
“It was a porcelain antique Prozac pill from the ’50s that was one of Carrie’s prized possessions,” brother Todd said.
He added that he’ll remember his mother and sister most for their resilience, and said both reminded him of Reynold’s role in 1964’s The Unsinkable Molly Brown.
“They were both Molly Browns of sorts,” Todd Fisher said. “It’s about a very strong woman. They were very, very strong women. We have so much of them that was left behind, all my sister’s words, and all the movies and all the things they created, and that’s what we need to remember.”
After the small private ceremony, the family plans a bigger memorial service.
“We’ll have a bigger service down the road for the public and all the family friends, but this was a private family service,” Fisher said. “It was fitting and it was beautiful.”
Fisher will be remembered for her iconic role of Princess Leia from the original Star Wars films, as well as for her satiric prose.
Reynolds’ legacy includes the classic film Singin’ in the Rain and her passion for preserving Hollywood history.
