Carolyn Moos, Jason Collins' Ex-Fiancé, Speaks Out About His Coming Out

Carolyn Moos, the onetime fiancé of NBA player Jason Collins (who came out earlier this year), is finally speaking out about how she feels about Collins' revelation and the 8-year relationship she shared with him.

“A month before I was set to marry the man I loved, he called off the wedding,” the as-told-to Cosmopolitan article begins. “I had no idea why. He and I had been together for eight years. We had planned to have children, build a family. Nearly four years later, I got my answer. My former fiancé, Jason Collins, a pro basketball player with the Washington Wizards, announced last spring in Sports Illustrated that he is gay."

Moos goes on to reveal that the first she learned of Collins' sexuality was the morning the Sports Illustrated article hit newsstands – though he hadn’t told her about it, or that she would be vaguely referenced in it. She also recounts the day Collins broke off the wedding after coming home from a road trip with his brother Jarron a month before they were to exchange vows. According to Moos, he never gave much of an explanation for why he didn’t want to go through with it.

The former WNBA player goes into detail about when, how and why she fell for Collins after their friendship at college at Stanford. She shares details of moments they had together. “I remember taking a nap after a day of hard training, and he woke me up by rubbing a rose across my face, telling me how much he believed in me,” she said, recalling one such moment.

The most telling sentence of the entire essay comes near the end, where it reads, “He's being hailed as a pioneer, but I believe true heroism is a result of being honest with yourself and with those you love.” Moos, if anything, seems completely open in her essay. For her, hearing “Jason Collins is gay,” translated to “the man I spent 8 years planning a life together lied to me.” Whereas, for much of the general population, it meant that a milestone moment had just occurred – “a gay, black, male athlete came out of the closet.”
