Carly Simon Loses Sisters Lucy & Joanna To Cancer One Day Apart

Carly Simon’s family was struck with tragedy last week when both of her sisters tragically passed away.

Carly’s sister Joanna, an opera singer, died from breast cancer at the age of 85 last Wednesday.

Lucy Simon, a Broadway composer, died from thyroid cancer at 82 the next day.

The hit pop star also made a statement confirming their passing and remembering her talented family.

“Their loss will be long and haunting,” Simon said. “We were three sisters who not only took turns blazing trails and marking courses for one another, we were each-other’s secret shares. The co-keeper’s of each other’s memories.”

Joanna Simon was born on October 20, 1936 in The Bronx. She was huge figure in the New York Opera scene from her debut as Cherubino in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro in 1962, and was also known for concert acclaimed recordings of songs like “Over the Rainbow.”

In an interview with The Toronto Star, Joanna reflected on not letting the pressures of show business interrupt her love of her sisters.

“When Lucy was 16, I envied her hourglass figure. When Carly first became successful, I envied her first $200,000 check. But those feelings lasted for 20 minutes, and I didn’t dwell on them,” Joanna sweetly recalled.

Joanna Sinion is survived by Carly, her stepson David Walker and a step-grandson.

Lucy Simon was born on May 5, 1940 in New York City. She initially found success singing with Carly as the duo The Simon Sisters, but she then forged her own path as an acclaimed songwriter and composer. She won two Grammy Awards as a producer of the children’s compilation album In Harmony: A Sesame Street Record as well as its sequel In Harmony 2, and was nominated for a Tony for composing The Secret Garden.

Lucy is survived by Carly, her husband of 55 years David Levine, and their children Julie and James. Peter Simon, their brother, was a photographer and photojournalist who died in 2018.
