Breakout rap artist Cardi B explained the meaning behind her rap name to Jimmy Fallon when she was a guest on The Tonight Show.
Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar, shared that her name choice had everything to do with alcohol and social media. “You know what, my sister’s name is Hennessy, so everybody used to call me Bacardi,” she explained. “Then it was my Instagram name – Bacardi, Bacardi B.”
With that name, however, her account kept getting deleted, which she believes the alcohol company was involved with. So she changed the name to simply Cardi B.
The rapper recently got engaged to Migos’ Offset (born Kiari Cephus) while on stage at a concert. “He would always tell me, ‘I’m gonna marry you.’ But I knew he was gonna give me a very expensive gift because he wasn’t there for my birthday, but I thought it was gonna be a watch or something,” she laughed, showing off her engagement ring.
Cardi B seemed to fluster Fallon a bit, as she was an unconventional guest. The rapper made strange shrieks and mouth noises, and Fallon and the audience could hardly keep from laughing throughout the interview. “You wanna know something?” Cardi B would ask until Fallon said he admitted he’d love to know.
She also spoke with Fallon about her Christmas plans. While she’s excited to head home to the Bronx, she said that she is not planning on getting gifts for any of her adult friends or family members. “No, ’cause you wanna know something? Everybody that I know got kids,” she said. “And that’s just a lot of kids. And I got new godkids that I don’t know where [from],” she added. “You know, once you start making money, everybody wants you to be their kids’ godmother or something.”
When Fallon mentioned the upcoming Grammys, Cardi B admitted she feels like “I already won.” Her single “Bodak Yellow” was the first No. 1 single from a female rapper since 1998, “so already you’ve just changed the game,” Fallon said.
“I’m so proud of myself,” Cardi B said with a smile.
