Captain America fans who are jonesing for sequel got some good news and some bad news today. The good news: Marvel and Walt Disney Studios have announced plans for a sequel to last year's Captain America: The First Avenger, starring Chris Evans. The bad news: it is not scheduled to hit screens until April 4, 2014!
Evans is expected to make a return as the star-spangled avenger in the sequel, but first he's going to whet appetites with The Avengers, which is set to be released next month. Directed by Joss Whedon, The Avengers features Captain America and an all-star squad of his fellow Marvel Studios heroes, including Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and super-spy Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).
Captain America: The First Avenger brought in $369 million in worldwide box office receipts following its release in 201 — a tidy sum that is not quite as solid as some of Marvel's other big-screen adaptions (last year's Thor took in $449 million).
While The First Avenger was mostly set in the 1940s, we last saw Captain America after he had been revived into present-day rom decades of deep-freeze. The Avengers picks up at that point, we can expect the 2014 installment to keep Captain America in the present day, although it is not yet clear who will be directing.
