Cannes Film Festival 2016 Winners: ‘I, Daniel Blake’ Gets Palme d’or

The Cannes Film Festival jury announced the prize-winners for the 69th festival that took place in Cannes, France over the last couple of weeks.

Presided over by George Miller, the Jury of the 69th Festival de Cannes announced the winners at a ceremony held at the Grand Théâtre Lumière on Sunday. Mel Gibson was present to award the Palme d’or to the best of the 21 films in Competition, which happened to be Ken Loach‘s I, Daniel Blake.

An honorary Palme d’or was awarded to French actor Jean-Pierre Léaud for his collected works by Arnaud Desplechin.

The Grand Prix award went to It’s Only the End of the World by Xavier Dolan. Both Olivier Assayas (Personal Shopper) and Christian Mungiu (Graduation) received Best Director Ex-Aequo awards. Award for Best Screenplay went to Asghar Farhadi for The Salesman.

American Honey got the jury prize, and Jaclyn Jose (Ma’ Rosa) and Shahab Hosseini (The Salesman) received the acting awards.

As for the short film awards, Juanjo Gimenez‘s “Timecode” received the Palme d’or and “The Girl Who Danced With the Devil” by João Paulo Miranda Maria received the special distinction honor.
