Actress Candice Bergen made a comment about vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance at the 76th Emmy Awards on Sunday night.
Bergen presented the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series award. She introduced the category by reflecting on her time starring in the comedy series Murphy Brown.
“I was surrounded by brilliant and funny actors, had the best scripts to work with, and in one classic moment, my character was attacked by Vice President Dan Quayle when Murphy became pregnant and decided to raise the baby as a single mother,” she said.
“Oh, how far we’ve come,” Bergen continued. “Today a Republican candidate for vice president would never attack a woman for having kids, so as they say, my work here is done.” She added a “Meow,” referring to Vance’s infamous “childless cat lady” comment that has been a topic of conversation over the past few weeks.
Her dig at the Republican nominee made the star-studded crowd erupt in laughter and prompted social media users to react at home.
“Candice Bergen has not lost that comedic timing,” one fan wrote.
“I hate award shows but inject that Candice Bergen ‘meow’ into my blood,” another said.
Bergen was not the only one who made a political statement on Sunday night. Actor D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai attended the event with a painted red handprint over his mouth, representing solidarity for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.
