B. Raymond Buxton, a Northern California man, finally claimed February’s $425 million Powerball jackpot on April Fool’s Day.
Weeks after the Feb. 19 drawing, Buxton – wearing a "Luck of the Jedi I Have” t-shirt – was ready to claim his prize at the California Lottery HQ in Sacramento. Buxton had spent the intervening time partially in shock, and partially getting everything organized by hiring a lawyer and financial adviser.
"'Unbelievable!' is all I could muster," Buxton said in a statement on Tuesday. "Once the initial shock passed, I couldn't sleep for days. Sitting on a ticket of this value was very scary.”
Now that Buxton has collected his $242.2 million lump-sum payment before taxes, he’s laying out the groundwork for a charity. "I'm going to enjoy my new job setting up a charitable foundation focused on the areas of pediatric health, child hunger and education.”
Buxton, who declined to speak to the press directly, wants to live a private life despite his newfound wealth. "It's amazing how a little slip of paper can change your life," he said in his statement.
Buxton had purchased the winning lottery ticket at a convenience store in Milpitas in the San Francisco Bay Area. He was getting lunch at the gas station's Subway, and decided to pick up a lottery ticket at the neighboring store. The ticket he picked up ended up being worth more than any other in California history.
