Caitlyn Jenner goes makeup-free and worries about how to represent the transgender community in a new clip from her reality series, I Am Cait.
In a new clip from I Am Cait, Jenner wakes up at 4:30 a.m. and grabs a camera to record the thoughts keeping her up at night. Makeup-free and clearly needing sleep, Jenner speaks directly to the camera.
“It is 4:32 in the morning and I can’t sleep.… I feel bad that these, especially young people, are going through such a difficult time in their life.…We don’t want people dying over this. We don’t want people murdered over this stuff,” she says.
Jenner adds that she worries she won’t adequately represent the transgender community as she embarks on her public transition, saying, “What a responsibility I have towards this community … Am I going to do everything right? Am I going to say the right things? Do I project the right image? My mind just spinning with thoughts. I just hope I get it right. I hope I get it right.”
When Jenner first went public with her transition, she made clear that she intended to use her fame as a platform to try to advocate for the transgender community, particularly transgender youth. Jenner followed through on this mission when she accepted the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2015 ESPY Awards in July, mentioning by name transgender teen Mercedes Williamson, who was stabbed to death, and Sam Taub, who committed suicide.
“Trans people deserve something vital. They deserve your respect. From that respect comes a more compassionate community, a more empathetic society and a better world for all of us,” Jenner told the crowd.
In anticipation of Sunday’s premiere of I Am Cait, reviews have been favorable. The New York Times wrote that the first episode “accomplishes its inspirational, educational and motivational goals.”
