The boxing competition at the Olympic Games in Paris has become a focal point of controversy, particularly surrounding Algerian boxer Imane Khelif. Khelif, competing in the women’s 66-kilogram division, has been under scrutiny after being barred from the 2023 world championships when she failed a gender identity test.
Despite the setback, Khelif recently advanced after her opponent, Italy’s Angela Carini, forfeited just 46 seconds into their bout.
Khelif’s presence in the Games has sparked a heated debate on the fairness of her competing in women’s sports. Critics argue that her inclusion undermines the integrity of the competition. Among the most prominent voices speaking out is Caitlyn Jenner, the former Olympic gold medalist who won the 1976 men’s decathlon before transitioning to female. Jenner voiced her concerns on Fox News’ The Story, stating that the issue has detracted from the Olympic experience.
“This situation has caused significant harm to the Olympic Games,” Jenner said, stressing that the debate has shifted attention away from the achievements of other athletes. She asserted that Khelif’s participation in the women’s category is inappropriate, arguing for clear rules based on DNA to determine eligibility.
“We need to have firm rules and regulations, and it all comes down to DNA,” Jenner explained, arguing that those with XY chromosomes should not compete in women’s events. She criticized the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for allowing Khelif to compete, accusing them of compromising the integrity and safety of women’s sports.
As the controversy surrounding Khelif escalates, the IOC has defended her eligibility, condemning the process that led to her disqualification from the 2023 World Championships. The IOC emphasized that Khelif and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting, who faced a similar situation, were disqualified by the International Boxing Association without proper due process.
Khelif went on to win the Olympic gold medal.
