Cailtyn Jenner attended Donald Trump‘s inauguration activities, in what she said was an attempt to help Republicans understand LGBTQ issues.
Jenner, a transgender woman who transitioned from Bruce Jenner in 2015, is one of the most famous transgender voices today. In an effort to advocate for transgender rights, she attended today’s inauguration and Thursday’s candlelight dinner.
Jenner has also been an outspoken Republican and said in an interview last June that, “Trump seems to be very much for women. He seems very much behind the LGBT community because of what happened in North Carolina with the bathroom issue.” Despite speaking against the bill at first, he then turned around and said the issue should be up to the states.
“Caitlyn sees this as a chance to bring attention to LGBTQ causes and she is committed to protecting human rights no matter the political party in power,” a source told People. “She has no problem speaking out if Republicans fail to protect equal rights.” Her publicist Alan Nierob, however, confirmed that Jenner did not have official plans to speak with Trump this weekend.
The election exit polls showed that only 14% of LGBT members supported Trump, against the 77% for Hillary Clinton. In the 60 Minutes interview following his election win, however, Trump did say he would uphold the Supreme Court decision that ruled same-sex marriage legal nationwide. Despite this, members of Trump’s cabinet, including Vice President Mike Pence, are opposed to homosexuality, and the LGBTQ community fears for their rights under the Trump administration.
