The first day of the Democratic Convention was not short of the bizarre occurrences that have come to reflect this election. Those in Philadelphia for the event took to Snapchat to document Bernie Sanders’ loyal voters protesting Hilary Clinton’s candidacy, the party’s chairwoman stepping down, performances by Boyz II Men and Demi Lovato and the torrential downpour that soaked everyone. The real showstopper, however, was First Lady Michelle Obama.
“I wake up every morning in a house built by slaves,” Obama said at the rally during her prime-time speech. Her uplifting words supported Clinton’s candidacy, focused on the progress her husband’s presidency has worked towards and called for unity within a fragmented political party.
Obama’s words were not the only thing that made a statement. Blue, the signature color of her party, never looked better. The First Lady’s dress was subtle, powerful and made in America. Just what shade of blue was the vibrant dress? It’s been identified as cobalt blue by the New York Times and ultramarine by the New York Post. Whatever the shade, Obama wore it with grace and complimented the stage she stood on.
The dress, designed by Christian Siriano, featured capped sleeves and a flared skirt. Obama has been known to support independent American designers. Siriano most recently designed Leslie Knope’s dress for the premiere of Ghostbusters after she revealed no designer would dress her.
