Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep emerged as the two top contenders for the best actress Oscar when the nominees for this year’s Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning by actress Anne Hathaway. Bullock earned her nomination for The Blind Side while Streep scored hers for her take on French chef Julia Child in Julie & Julia.

The Academy increased the number of Best Picture nominees to 10 from 5 in years past. James Cameron‘s Avatar and Kathryn Bigelow‘s The Hurt Locker each scored nine nominations – especially notable because Cameron and Bigelow were once married. The 82nd annual Academy Awards, co-hosted by Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, will take place Sunday, March 7, starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC.
