Last Wednesday, Bruno Mars dropped the music video for his song, “That’s What I Like,” the second single from his album 24K Magic, which was released in October of 2016.
The video – seemingly the love-child of Beyoncé‘s “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” and Who Framed Roger Rabbit – shows Mars dancing in front of a grey backdrop while campy animations pop-up on and around him.
Mars’ jolting – yet still smooth – dance moves are accentuated by the quick appearance and disappearance of the animation. The R&B bass-line and the quick horns have the same effect on the song as Mars’ dancing and the animation have on the video.
The video, since being released on Wednesday has already amassed nearly 27 million views on YouTube alone and “That’s What I Like” has since risen to number four on the Billboard 100 chart – it was ranked seventh last week.
Mars performed “That’s What I Like” at the 59th Grammy Awards on February 12, the 2017 Brit Awards on February 22, and last night on the iHeartRadio Music Awards, March 5.
The video is directed by Mars and Jonathan Lia, who has production credits on Beyoncé’s album, Lemonade, as well as her self-titled visual album. Lia has also produced Aziz Ansari‘s comedy special, Aziz Ansari Live in Madison Square Garden, David Bowie‘s David Bowie: Valentine’s Day, and Kanye West‘s short film, Cruel Summer, which was never publicly released.
Mars’ album 24K Magic has been certified gold in Australia, France, Hungary, Japan, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. In the United States, it has been certified platinum, having sold over one million copies.
