The Brooklyn Bridge’s two American flags were replaced by white flags on Tuesday, causing a hunt for those who pulled off the stunt and an investigation into why it was done.

White Flags On Brooklyn Bridge

Video footage shows a group of four or five individuals crossing the bridge at 3:00 a.m. A half hour later, the video shows the lights on the bridge's Brooklyn tower followed by the Manhattan tower going out, which was later determined to be the result of aluminum baking pans fastened to the lights, reported USA Today. By 5:30 a.m., construction workers noticed what looked liked bleached American flags flying from atop the Brooklyn Bridge.

Police have yet to track down the culprits of the flag caper, who climbed a locked gate and scaled a cable to get to the pillars on which the flags are flown.

"We're lucky they just put a flag up there — and not a bomb," a law enforcement source told the New York Post. "It's an embarrassment."

Law enforcement officials do not believe that the flag ruse had to do with terrorism or politics. The prevailing theory is that it was an art project.

"There's no particular nexus to terrorism or politics," NYPD anti-terrorism chief John Miller said. "It might be some kind of art project or statement. But we are not sure what that statement is."

Though Miller isn’t keen to believe the stunt was politically motivated, it’s been speculated that the white flags – an international sign of surrender – could have been a call to put a stop to the fighting between Hamas militants and the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip that is resulting in the loss of innocent lives.
