Though he cracked mainstream success, Stevens was a fixture in the standup scene. He was frequently performing at comedy festivals in Los Angeles, Montreal, and Vancouver. Stevens also earned acting credits in The Hangover, Due Date, and The Hangover Part II. He also co-created the Comedy Central series Brody Stevens: Enjoy It! with fellow comedian and close pal Zach Galifianakis.

Throughout his life, Stevens was a vocal activist about his depression and the struggles he fought against it. Back in 2011, he was reportedly hospitalized after a bipolar episode.

Stars took to Twitter to remember the standup.

Big Mouth creator Nick Kroll echoed their feelings. He tweeted, “#RIPBrodyStevens he was so funny and weird and vulnerable and wild and kind. Every time he was onstage it was an adventure. Here’s some comics talking about what made him so special.”

Reps for Stevens issued a statement on Friday evening. They wrote, “Brody was an inspiring voice who was a friend to many in the comedy community. He pushed creative boundaries and his passion for his work and his love of baseball were contagious. He was beloved by many and will be greatly missed. We respectfully ask for privacy at this time.”
