Brittney Griner Files For Annulment Days After Wife Announces Pregnancy

WNBA superstar Brittney Griner has filed annulment papers from wife Glory Johnson, who announced her pregnancy the day prior.

“Last Wednesday, Glory and I agreed to either legally separate, get divorced, or annul our marriage,” Griner said in a statement obtained by ESPN. “I can confirm that today I filed for an annulment. In the week prior to the wedding, I attempted to postpone the wedding several times until I completed counseling, but I still went through with it. I now realize that was a mistake.”

Johnson, who like Griner plays in the WNBA, contradicts Griner’s claim that there had been discussions between the two about ending their marriage of less than a month. Johnson’s agent D.J. Fisher claims that his client is “extremely hurt and blindsided.”

The day before Griner filed annulment papers, Johnson announced that the two were expecting their first child together.

“It has always been a dream of mine to start a family with someone I love. Being a professional athlete that plays year round, there is never a perfect time to get pregnant without putting my career on hold,” Johnson had said in a statement. “The entire process, from learning our fertility options, to making the sacrifices necessary nine months before this child is born, is merely preparing me to become a great wife and an even better mother. The hardest part is sitting out this WNBA season, being away from my loving teammates, and not being able to be on the court and play for our devoted fans.”

Johnson’s agent said, “She loves Brittney and made a huge sacrifice to carry a child, put her career on hold, invest in their relationship and their future.”

Griner and Johnson, who became engaged in August 2014, wed May 8, two weeks after the two were arrested following a domestic violence incident. As a result of the incident, both athletes were suspended for the first seven games of the WNBA season.
