New evidence brought forth by Brittany Murphy’s father, Angelo Bertolotti, suggests Murphy, who died in December of 2009 was murdered.
Murphy was found dead in her Los Angeles home in 2009 at the age of 32, leading to wild speculation over her cause of death. The coroner’s office reported Murphy died of natural causes, a pneumonia and anemia, and her husband, Simon Monjack, died of the same cause five months later in 2010, at the age of 39.
Bertolotti divorced from Murphy’s mother when she was a small child and was estranged from his famous daughter at the time of her death. In January 2012, Bertolotti went to the Los Angeles County Superior Court to gain access to Murphy’s hair samples, which the L.A. County Coroner’s Office admitted to have not tested for toxic substances, according to The Examiner. Though the case was dismissed in May, Bertolotti now claims he was able to pay for independent testing of some of his daughter’s hair; though how he obtained the samples is unknown.
The test results released on Monday state that Murphy had extremely high levels of metals, suggesting heavy metal poisoning, consistent with rat poison.
“Testing the hair strand sample identified as ‘back of the head’ we have detected ten (10) heavy metals above the WHO [World Health Organization] high levels recommendation. If we were to eliminate the possibility of a simultaneous accidental heavy metals exposure to the sample donor then the only logical explanation would be an exposure to these metals (toxins) administered by a third party perpetrator with likely criminal intent,” reads the report obtained by TheWrap.
The lab that performed the test, Carlson Company, confirmed its authenticity to TheWrap, but refused to release more information. The lab found that Murphy had high levels of aluminum and manganese in her system, among other metals. These heavy metals are reportedly commonly found in rat poison and insecticides.
As of now, the investigation into Murphy’s death remains closed, but Bertolotti hopes the new lab tests will reopen the case. Bertolotti says he already has a suspect in mind, but does not want to release the name to the public yet to ensure a fair and just investigation.
“We would like the investigation opened again to discover who did it. So as not to jeopardize the new investigation, I can’t say who I suspect as of yet,” Bertolotti told the Daily News.
Without evidence, media speculation has focused on Murphy’s mother, Sharon Murphy, who lived with her daughter and son-in-law at the times of their deaths and inherited her daughter’s estate after her death.
