Britney Young, ‘GLOW’ Star ‘Machu Picchu,’ On Learning To Wrestle, Alison Brie [VIDEO EXCLUSIVE]

One of Netflix’s newest series, GLOW, has been a hit with both fans and critics since its release in late June. It has brought attention to a little known, real-life wrestling show from the ’80s of the same name – the acronym stands for the ‘Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling.’ GLOW has been lauded for its depiction of the ’80s, its accurate portrayal of wrestling, and its strong, mostly female cast. One of the most pleasant surprises, though, is one of the show’s break-out stars, Britney Young.

Young plays Carmen Wade, a shy woman who comes from a long lineage of wrestlers, none of whom want her to join the family business because of her gender. Known in the ring as Machu Picchu, Carmen spends the season coming into her own as a wrestler and as a confident woman, working to gain the love and acceptance of her protective family.

Young recently sat down with uInterview to discuss all things GLOW.

Don’t be fooled by Young’s character’s familiarity with wrestling – Young herself had no experience in the ring and, like the majority of her co-stars, had to learn the sport from scratch.

“We definitely started out pretty cocky thinking we could do simple things, like getting into the ring,” Young told uInterview exclusively. “But that first day it took us, like, 20 minutes for all fourteen of us to just get in there. But it was so much fun. I’ve never been so sore in my life.”

One of her co-stars showed a particular dedication to making sure the wrestling was right: Alison Brie.

“Alison is feisty. She is down for anything,” said Young. “We definitely had some times where … they kept saying, ‘Do you girls need a break?’ And she was like, ‘No! Lets go again. Slam me down!'”

Young continued, “She really wants to make it look authentic and to really get it right.”

Even with all the work they put into the ring preparing for the show – a month before shooting, the actresses spent three to four hours a day training – somehow, no one got hurt in the ring. But it doesn’t mean they all came away unscathed.

“The only injury I had came during our roller-skating episode when I feel roller-skating but other than that, beyond bumps and bruises, none of us got hurt,” Young recalled. “It was godsend that we were able to make it through out the entire season without injury.”

Now that the show has gained some serious traction, Young is looking forward to whatever is coming next, albeit after a short, and much deserved, vacation.

Said Young, “This is kind of my first time off in like seven years, so I’m kind of enjoying this mini-vacation I’m on.”

But after the vacation is over, Young knows exactly what she wants, what fans want, and what critics want as well.

“Hopefully, season two!”

The first season of GLOW is currently available to stream on Netflix.
