Pop sensation Britney Spears‘ son, Jayden, will turn 18 this week, but despite his legal adult status, Spears will have to continue to pay child support.
Spears and her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, were married in 2004. They welcomed their son Sean, who turns 19 next month, in 2005, followed by Jayden in 2006. Spears and Federline split in 2007. In the summer of 2023, Federline moved Sean and Jayden to Hawaii.
The original child support payment for Spears was $20,000 a month, but it doubled to $40,000 in 2018, as Federline was the parent who spent the majority of the time with their kids.
Although her sons are over (or almost over) the legal age of adulthood, Federline’s attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan has asserted that Hawaii law states that a parent who pays child support must continue, even if the child is older than 18, if the child has not yet graduated from high school.
Kaplan told the court, “The child support in this case for Jayden is being paid consistent with that law. His graduation from high school will be in November.”
Federline has dismissed the suspicion that he purposefully chose to move the family to Hawaii to take advantage of the law allowing for continued child payments.
Spears is willing to continue to pay her children’s child support.
Recently, after years of estrangement, Spears and her sons have reconnected to rebuild their relationship, reportedly with occasional phone calls instead of texts. It came to light in July that Spears had begun to reach out to her sons to mend their relationship and was dedicated to being there when they were ready to spend time with her.
Sean and Jayden had reportedly not spoken to their mother due to their embarrassment over her risqué social media posts.
