Britney Spears Addresses Court On Conservatorship: ‘I’m Traumatized’

Britney Spears attended a hearing to address the court about her 13-year conservatorship. “I’ve told the world I’m happy and ok,” the singer said of the conservatorship. “I’m traumatized. I’m not happy, I can’t sleep… I just want my life back.”

A conservatorship can be established where a parent or guardian is legally responsible for protecting and managing someone else’s financial affairs, medical and life decisions. The guardian in charge is called the “conservator,” which in Spear’s case is her father, Jamie Spears.

Conservatorships are made when a person is mentally or physically unable to care for themselves.

Britney’s conservatorship was established in 2008. The reason behind the decision has not been disclosed though the singer was experiencing a public meltdown at the time. Jamie and Lynne Spears referred to Briney as “an adult child in the throes of a mental health crisis” in February 2008.

In July 2020, Britney’s brother, Bryan Spears, revealed during a podcast interview that Britney did not want to be in conservatorship.

“In general, I think, you know, [Jamie has] done the best he could given the situation he was put in. You know, we’ve had to, like, work together as a family to kind of keep it all going … she’s always wanted to get out of [the conservatorship],” he explained.

This was the first time she addressed the court since her court-appointed attorney, Samuel Ingham III, filed to remove Britney’s father as conservator of approximately $60 million estate last year.

Even though there have been hearings in the past year, Britney has kept the situation private.
