Monday night's Dancing with the Stars got pretty intense for the five remaining contestants, as the second competition revolved around an "instant dance," in which the couples were not forewarned which music the judges were going to spring on them. This required just a few minutes of preparation before each couple had to basically improvise most of the dance.
Jennifer Grey continued to have steady competition from Brandy, whose first dance with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy was a beautiful waltz that earned her almost a perfect score (29) and a major boost of confidence, allowing her to really cut loose and goof around a bit in the improvised cha-cha which was to follow. Her bravery ultimately worked out in her favor, but still brought her the slightly lower score of 28, rounding out her night with an impressive total of 57 points. Grey and partner Derek Hough had their own success story, however. You wouldn't have known Grey had been suffering from pain due to tendinitis because her first dance, a quickstep, earned three 9's from the judges for a total of 27, which still fell short of Brandy's early score, but her instant rumba earned her three 10's — the first perfect score on this season of DWTS — which tied her with Brandy at 57.
Kyle Massey wasn't too far behind, finishing with a total score of 56 for his much-improved Viennese Waltz and his contagiously energetic instant jive set to "Good Golly Miss Molly." Kurt Warner didn't fare quite as well, earning six straight 8's the whole night through to finish with a total of 48 points, which was still one point above Bristol Palin's 47, which came up at the bottom of the leaderboard. Her Argentine tango with Mark Ballas fell a little flat, but still earned all 8's. It was her instant dance, a samba, that earned her the fateful 7 that pushed her to the bottom. –KIMBERLY STEELE
