Breaking Bad "Buried," continues the arc of Hank (Dean Norris) unearthing Walt’s (Bryan Cranston) position in the New Mexico drug world and figuring out what to do with the information. His first thought is to get Skyler (Anna Gunn) to talk.
As soon as Hank presses the garage door clicker, closing it as Walt stands rigidly next to his car door, he picks up his cell phone to call Skyler. Walt had the same idea, but was late to the draw. Hank manages to get Skyler to meet him at a local diner where he tries to sidle up to her and draw all of the dirty secrets she’s kept for Walt out of her. As soon as he pulls the tape recorder out, its clear Skyler won’t be that easy to crack as she wisely suggests she get a lawyer first. Crossing another boundary suggesting that they take the kids to his house puts Skyler over the edge. Hank takes hold of her arm in an attempt to make her stay, but Skyler repeatedly shouts, “Am I under arrest?” before wrenching free from his grasp and storming out.
After failing to find Skyler at the car wash, Walt heads to Saul’s office to get him up to speed on his DEA brother-in-law’s accurate suspicions. Saul (Bob Odenkirk) advises him to take the battery out of his cell phone so he can’t be tracked and meekly suggests he considers offing Hank. Walter White might exist in a moral gray area most of the time, but killing family is blatantly wrong and crossing a line for him. For the time being, he decides to get his drug money safely away, driving it out into the desert.
While Walt’s out and about, Marie (Betsy Brandt) pays a visit to Skyler at the house, and its clear from the get-go that comforting her sister might not be a top priority. Almost as soon as they sit down, Skyler begins to tear up. Marie starts off by saying that Hank believes the moment Skyler knew about Walt was around the time of the dinner when she walked fully clothed into the pool. Then, she launches into a few telling bullet points – when Hank got shot, the gambling addiction, etc. Skyler’s muffled sobs continue and Marie coolly puts it together that Skyler knew what Walt was up to for quite awhile. Then she slaps her sister square across the face and tries to make away with her daughter. Hank stops her, but when they get back in the car, Marie urges her husband to nail her brother-in-law.
After burying his loot in the desert, an exhausted Walt goes home to a jittery Skyler. Before she can find out where he’s been or what he knows, he passes out on the bathroom floor in his tighty-whiteys. When he wakes up, Skyler is by his side with a cold compress on his head. She learns that Walt's hidden the money, as he suggests that he'll turn himself in if she promises to keep the money for their kids. Skyler shuts the idea down, smartly stating that if he goes down the money will be lost.
Meanwhile, Lydia (Lauren Fraser) inspects the new Walt-free meth lab built in an underground desert bunker. The meth she’s transporting is sub-par and she intends to know why and have the situation rectified. She wants Todd back in the picture, as he was better able to replicate Walt’s methods. She’s not really there to negotiate, however. As it happens, she’d ordered a slaughtering of all the men in the operation that weren’t doing as she said – though she refuses to look at the bodies of the men whose lives she had taken for her purposes.
At Hank and Marie’s, Marie is trying to convince her husband to take his suspicions to the DEA. Hank reminds her that when it comes down to it, all they really are are suspicions, since his “proof” consists of a poetry book inscription. If he goes to the DEA with the slight information he has, he’ll be kicked off the force. First, because Heisenberg turned out to be his brother-in-law, and second, because he didn’t have enough to bring him in. His plan? Make an airtight case before letting anyone else in.
Hank’s decision could pay off, as by the end of the episode Jessie Pinkman (Aaron Paul) finds himself in the interrogation room. After tossing stacks of cash out his window, he and his car holding all his meth earnings, were located in a nearby park.
Breaking Bad returns next Sunday on AMC at 9/8c.
