In an incident at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Brazilian swimmer Ana Carolina Vieira became the center of controversy after she was caught leaving the athletes’ village with her boyfriend, Gabriel Santos.
According to reports, the incident occurred the night before Vieira’s team, Brazil, finished seventh in the 4x100m freestyle relay heat, which resulted in their elimination from the competition. Vieira and Santos reportedly enjoyed a night out of sightseeing in the City Of Light. Vieira and Santos were then reprimanded by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) for their unauthorized departure from the village, which the COB described as “disrespectful and aggressively challenging.”
In response to the disciplinary action, the 22-year-old swimmer from São Paulo has broken her silence and taken to social media to express her side of the story. Vieira claims she is innocent and has filed a harassment complaint against the Brazilian national federation, stating that she feels “helpless” and that the issue has not been resolved.
In a video posted on her Instagram account, Vieira stated, “I have already filed a complaint of harassment, and nothing has been resolved. It is harassment within the team. I will speak to my lawyers. I promise to tell everything. I am sad and nervous, but I have peace of mind because I know who I am; I know what my character and my nature are.”
The Brazilian swim team leader, Gustavo Otsuka, has defended the decision to banish Vieira and Santos from the Games and stated that athletes were not in Paris “to play or take a vacation” and that they must respect the rules and responsibilities that come with representing their country.
Vieira, who previously represented Brazil at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where her team finished 12th in the 4x100m freestyle relay, faces potential legal action against the Brazilian Confederation of Aquatic Sports (CBDA) and the COB.
In a statement, the COB confirmed that Vieira had been removed from the delegation and would be returning to Brazil immediately. At the same time, Santos was issued a warning for his involvement in the incident.
