Brandon Vandenburg, Vanderbilt Football Player, Found Guilty On Rape Charges
Brandon Vandenburg, a former Vanderbilt University football player, has once again been found guilty of rape.
Brandon Vandenburg Guilty
Vandenburg, 23, was found guilty on all counts – five of aggravated rape, two of aggravated sexual battery and one of unlawful photography, reported Yahoo Sports. The charges stemmed from a 2013 rape of an unconscious woman at his Vanderbilt dorm room.
Saturday’s verdict at the Nashville, Tenn., courtroom marked the second time that Vandenburg has been convicted on the aforementioned charges. Last year, Vandenburg and his teammate Cory Batey were both found guilty. However, a mistrial was declared when it came to light that a member of the jury was a statutory rape victim. Batey was once again found guilty during his April trial.
Jaborian “Tip” McKenzie and Brandon Banks, who were also on the Vanderbilt football team, are awaiting trial. They have pleaded not guilty.
In June 2013, Vandenburg arrived on the Vanderbilt campus as a junior transfer. He soon began dating a young woman who he had met during his recruiting visit. A couple of weeks later, on June 22, 2013, he met up with the woman. The next morning, she woke up in Vandenburg’s bed in pain, only recalling that she had been sipping on a drink that Vandenburg had given to her.
Surveillance footage captured Vandenburg and his teammates carrying the woman into his dorm room that night. The prosecution claimed that Vandenburg had stood by and filmed while he encouraged his roommates to rape the woman. Following the rape, it was stated that Vandenburg met with his accomplices to devise a story and a way to cover their tracks.
Vandenburg faces 15-25 years in prison. A sentencing date has yet to be set.
