Brad Pitt is suing his ex-wife, Angelina Jolie, for selling her shares of their wine company to a rival investor.
The former couple purchased a controlling interest in Chateau Miraval, located in south-east France, in 2008, six years prior to their marriage. Pitt contributed 60% of the purchase price, and Jolie controlled the 40% remaining. After their split in 2019, Jolie was allowed to sell her shares in 2021 for $164 million. However, Pitt stated that his ex-wife agreed not to sell her stake without his permission. Jolie then sold her shares to Tenute del Mondo, a wine-making company controlled by Russian oligarch Yuri Shefler.
Pitt’s lawyer said that the actor’s supervision of the business has turned it into a “multi-million-dollar international success story,” while Jolie had “contributed nothing.”
“Through the purported sale, Jolie sought to inflict harm on Pitt, according to the legal documents.” Jolie knew and that “Shefler and his affiliates would try to control the business Pitt had built and to undermine Pitt’s investment in Miraval.”
“Jolie pursued and then consummated the purported sale in secret, purposely keeping Pitt in the dark, and knowingly violating Pitt’s contractual rights,” the documents added.
Pitt’s legal team has requested a trial by jury, which Jolie has yet to make a statement.
