A representative for Brad Pitt has warned about apparent scammers using AI to impersonate Pitt, one of which swindled a fan out of $850,000.
“It’s awful that scammers take advantage of fans’ strong connection with celebrities,” Pitt’s spokesperson said in a statement. “But this is an important reminder to not respond to unsolicited online outreach, especially from actors who have no social media presence.”
In an interview with Seven to Eight on France’s TF1 channel, the fan who suffered in extreme – a French woman named Anne – recounted how she was hoodwinked.
It was the actor’s “mother” who first reached out to Anne online saying, “Her son needed someone like me.” A few days later, a social media account claiming to be Pitt reached out.
“At first I said to myself that it was fake, that it’s ridiculous…but I’m not used to social media, and I didn’t really understand what was happening to me,” Anne remembered.
As Pitt, the scammers proceeded to tell Anne that he was unable to afford his kidney transplant while his accounts were frozen due to his divorce. The messages were accompanied by AI-generated images of Pitt in a hospital bed.
Convinced she and Pitt were on the precipice of a blossoming relationship, Anne divorced her husband. Originally sending the scammers money to pay for the expensive handbags she was promised, she began to send money to cover his hospital bills. Altogether, Anne sent $850,000 to the scammers.
“There are few men who write to you like that. I loved the man I was talking to; he knew how to talk to women and it was very well put together,” Anne said.
Seven to Eight reported that Anne had a history of mental health struggles, including depression.
Upon seeing news coverage of Pitt’s romance with Ines de Ramon, Anne registered the fraud and filed a police report.
“I ask myself why they chose me to do such harm like this?” She said. “I’ve never harmed anyone. These people deserve hell.”
Due to the slew of cruel and mocking comments regarding the woman’s naivety, the Seven and Eight episode was ultimately pulled from circulation.
