'Book of Mormon' Sweeps Tony Nominations, Radcliffe Snubbed

Award season may have come to a close for movie buffs, but fans of the stage are about to have their day, as the nominees for the 65th Annual Tony Awards were announced Tuesday morning, with South Park creators' Trey Parker and Matt Stone's Broadway hit The Book of Mormon leading the pack with 14 nominations. This almost hits the record for the most Tony nominations ever, set by The Producers in 2001 with 15 nominations and tied by 2009's Billy Elliot. Though there had been buzz about Daniel Radcliffe (pictured) nabbing a nomination for his Broadway performance in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, the Harry Potter star was overlooked.

This year's runner-up was The Scottsboro Boys, with 12 nominations. Both productions were recognized for the highest honor, Best Musical, alongside the less expected Catch Me if You Can and Sister Act. Several on- and offscreen talents grace the categories for Best Performance by an Actor / Actress in a Leading Role, including Al Pacino, who played Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, Frances McDormand for Good People, and Vanessa Redgrave for Driving Miss Daisy.

The awards show will be held at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on June 12, 2011. It will be broadcast live on CBS. —KIMBERLY STEELE
