Bombay Talkies, the Indian anthology film that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, was directed by four separate directors – Anurag Kashyap, Dibaker Banerjee, Zoya Akhtar and Karan Johar. Johar, Banerjee and Kashyap gave an exclusive interview with Uinterview in which they discussed how they secured the top-rate directors for the Bollywood project.
The ambitious film that has four parts – each directed by a separate filmmaker – was the brainchild of producer Ashi Dua. “She came up with this idea and she gave me this idea and she said, ‘We don’t make films like this anymore,’” Kashyap told Uinterview exclusively.
Kashyap also revealed that he was surprised that they were also bring Johar onto the project, who Banerjee explained is the “strongest Bollywood presence there is.” Johar, however, was genuinely eager to be involved in Bombay Talkies but “played hard to get” before taking the directing opportunity.
“I was actually hoping that they would ask me, and I said that if I immediately agreed it would look like I was too eager,” Johar admitted to Uinterview. “But then finally, when it actually came down to whether I should do it or not, I was always dying because I really wanted to be part of this and I just felt it would be great to come on board and do something unusual.”
