The body of Julie Mott, a 25-year-old Texas woman who had suffered from cystic fibrosis, was stolen from a San Antonio, Tex., funeral home.
After Mott died earlier this month due to complications from cystic fibrosis, her body was transported to the Mission Park Funeral Chapels North, where she was to be cremated. Dick Tips, the owner of the funeral home, believes that whomever stole Mott’s body could have been against the practice of cremation.
“I can’t believe this is happening to such dear friends of mine and she’s a dear friend of mine,” said Tips. “This is a person that I know. This is a person that I know and I want her back. We think it is possible that the fact that someone didn’t believe in the cremation process, versus the traditional burial process.”
Tips has offered a $20,000 reward for information that could lead police to finding Mott’s body.
At this time, police don’t know if Mott’s body was taken by a single person or a group. According to Sgt. Javier Salazar, there was no apparent forced entry.
“There wasn’t any forced entry to the facility,” Salazar told the San Antonio Express-News. “So, what it’s believed is between the hours of 1:30 p.m. when the service ended to about 4:30 p.m. when they locked up for the evening, someone came in and stole Ms. Mott’s remains. That person remains at large.”
“The most impressive thing in this whole investigation has been that family,” Salazar added. “To lose somebody that was doing their best to live a full life in spite of their condition, to see this family go through that loss … and then be able to celebrate her life and then of course find the closure that many of us find with a funeral service, that was robbed from them.”
Mott’s father Tim Mott released a statement, expressing the hope that his daughter’s body is found so that the family can have closure.
“We just want our daughter’s remains returned so we can have some closure to our grief,” said Tim Mott, according to News 4 San Antonio.
Anyone with information about the disappearance of Mott’s body is asked to call 210-225-TIPS.
