Bobby Brown opened up about his turbulent relationship with ex-wife Whitney Houston in a special interview that aired following the premiere of the Lifetime biopic, Whitney.
Brown, 45, was married to Houston for 15 years from 1992-2007 and shares daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, 21, with the iconic singer. Houston and Brown’s troubled relationship has been widely examined and talked about, and features heavily in the new biopic, which premiered Saturday, Jan. 17 on Lifetime. Though Houston’s immediate family have spoken out against the film, Brown participated in an interview special, Bobby Brown: Remembering Whitney, with Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson, that aired after the Whitney premiere.
Brown spoke lovingly of Houston, who died in 2012, and recounted details of their relationship, including their first date – the pair went to the movies to see Uncle Buck. Brown also spoke fondly of their wedding day, saying, “That was a beautiful day. She just looked beautiful…I just started crying. I didn’t know what to do. I cried. I wept.”
In the interview, Brown also addressed rumors of infidelity and drug use in their marriage, both of which make appearances in the Lifetime film. “There was infidelity in the marriage, yes, on both parts,” Brown said.
Brown insisted that they loved each other, but just grew apart and made mistakes, adding, “We make mistakes, people make mistakes. We’re human.”
Brown also revealed that the two used to do cocaine together frequently, and that the first time he saw Houston with cocaine was on their honeymoon. “It wasn’t like all day…it wasn’t that. When she did, it wasn’t in excess. That didn’t come till later in our marriage,” Brown said.
When asked what he remembers most about Houston, Brown answered, “She has a long list of things she should be remembered for, but for the most part, that voice. That voice, and that heart.”
