Bob Seger released his first song in more than two years about the late Eagles rocker Glenn Frey.
The track, called “Glenn Song,” is free for download at glenn-song-bobseger.com and comes to us on the one-year anniversary of the guitarist’s death. He died at 67 from a combination of complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia.
“Glenn Song” is Seger’s first new original since October 2014 when he released Ride Out, his seventh studio album.
Seger and Frey had been friend for 50 years after meeting in Detroit in the 1960s. “I loved him like he was my brother,” said Seger, 71, who mentored Frey though was just three years his senior. Frey even played acoustic guitar and sang backup vocals for Seger’s first hit, “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man,” in 1968.
“When I think about you I always smile,” is one lyric from “Glenn Song.” “There was no one quite like you.” Seger performed at the Kennedy Center Honors last month as part of the Eagles tribute, and sang “Heartache Tonight,” which he co-wrote in 1979 for the band. He also performed alongside Kings of Leon and Vince Gill for a version of “Life in the Fast Lane.”
Following Frey’s death, the Eagles decided to break up. They performed a special tribute to their fallen member at the Grammys in 2016 and declared that would be their last performance, barring the Kennedy Center Honors tribute. “I think that was the final farewell,” frontman Don Henley told the BBC. “I don’t think you’ll see us performing again. I think that was probably it. I think it was an appropriate farewell.”
