Bob Dylan, 75, received his gold Nobel Prize medal in a private ceremony in Stockholm on Saturday.
The singer-songwriter was previously unable to attend the Nobel Prize ceremony with the other laureates due to a prior commitment. “Spirits were high. Champagne was had. Quite a bit of time was spent looking closely at the gold medal,” wrote secretary of the Swedish Academy Sara Danius in a blog post.
Dylan was in Stockholm for two sold-out concerts as well, one of which Danius and several other Swedish Academy members attended. Dylan is the first singer-songwriter to win a Nobel Prize for Literature, specifically, “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” He is also the first American to win the prize in literature since Toni Morrison in 1993.
He must deliver a Nobel lecture by June, or else give up the $927,740 that comes with winning a Nobel prize. Danius has said the musician will probably tape a lecture and send it to the Academy.
