Blue Ivy Carter, Beyonce and Jay-Z‘s eight-year-old daughter, was nominated for a Grammy last week, making her one of the youngest people ever to be considered for the award. Her nomination is for her work in the music video of “Brown Skin Girl,” one of mom Beyonce’s latest hits.
Though the young artist wasn’t originally on the November 23 list of Grammy nominations, she was added in on December 11, as she meets the Grammy requirements for nominating a featured artist.
“To be recognized as a GRAMMY nominee, a featured artist must be credited as a featured artist; and make a significant and artistic contribution beyond accompaniment,” the official 63rd Grammy Awards rulebook reads. “[Featured artists] are eligible in performance categories if they are credited as a featured artist on the track/single.”
Though Carter’s nomination is historical as far as the Grammys go, it’s not the first time her role in “Brown Skin Girl” has been lauded – she also won an NAACP Image Award and a Soul Train Award for the song and video.
Aside from “Brown Skin Girl,” Carter’s work includes a featured verse on one of dad Jay-Z’s songs, appearances in a number of other Beyonce videos, and even a timely pandemic-era tutorial video on the importance of washing your hands.
