The Blob, the classic 1958 horror movie, will soon have its second remake, which will be helmed by director Simon West.
It was announced that West would be behind the camera for the latest The Blob remake by Deadline on Thursday. “Simon West has a unique gift for blending cutting edge effects, awesome visual spectacle and a hint of humor,” Pascal Degove, Managing Director of Goldcrest, told the outlet. “He’s the perfect choice to reimagine The Blob and we’re so excited to be partnering with him.”
“We grew up on The Blob. Simon West has a terrific and terrifying vision for bringing this iconic outer-space creature to life for a new generation,” added producers Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten. “We’re grateful to Jack Harris for the opportunity to reintroduce a classic franchise, and to Goldcrest and Taewon for joining us on this journey.”
West, whose past directing credits include Wild Card, The Mechanic and Expendables 2, believes that modern CGI not only justifies remaking the film, but could completely elevate the concept on The Blob.
“With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of The Blob,” he said. “The world I create will be totally believable, immersive and emotionally satisfying. It’s a thrill to introduce an enduring icon to a wider audience and a whole new era of fans.”
In the original film, which starred Steve McQueen, a meteor crashes, unleashing a gelatinous alien life-form that comes to be known as The Blob. It crawls and creeps along the streets of a Pennsylvania town, consuming all the people in its path.
