Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton took The Voice stage together Monday night to deliver their first live performance of their duet “Go Ahead and Break My Heart.”
Stefani and Shelton, who first went public with their relationship towards the end of 2015, come from two different genres of music. But is wasn’t long before the loved-up duo found themselves organically collaborating on a song together. Since Stefani and Shelton’s relationship started through The Voice, it was only natural that they debut the duet on the singing competition.
Stefani had given fans a heads up about the “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” performance on Instagram. She had posted a picture of herself with Shelton in front of a tree with a carving of their initials on Instagram, writing, “@nbcthevoice #goaheadandbreakmyheart tonight! Omg ❤️Gx.”
The song, Stefani’s first country track, was soon climbing the iTunes charts.
Ahead of the performance, Stefani had shared a behind-the-scenes snap with Shelton.
Talking about “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” before its release, Shelton admitted that both he and Stefani were anxious to see if people would like it. “We’re a little bit nervous about it, but nervous in a way that we can’t wait and nervous in a way that we hope people think it’s as good as we think it is,” Shelton told People magazine. “It’s like people getting a look at something personal for the first time.”
The song, according to Shelton is “about some serious insecurities that we had when we first started down this road with each other. We both had trust issues. We were getting over it, but we wrote this song about it, and it’s perfect.”
Shelton’s new album If I’m Honest, which features “Go Ahead and Break My Heart,” will be released May 20.
