Charlbi Dean, an actress and model who recently appeared in Black Lightning and the Cannes Film Festival hit Triangle of Sadness, has died at the age of 32.
She reportedly died from a viral infection in New York, though her brother Alex Jacobs said the family is still awaiting autopsy results.
She fell ill suddenly and went with her fiancé Luke Volker in the emergency room and died hours later.
Jacobs said, “This literally happened within the span of a day,” emphasizing how awfully sudden this tragedy was.

He also added that Dean was “extremely loving, more than anyone I could have ever known. She reminded us every day how much she loves us.” Jacobs referred to her as “the glue that kept us together.”
Charlbi Dean Kriek was born on February 5, 1990 in Cape Town, South Africa. She began modeling at the age of six and had a strong career modeling in cities like New York, Tokyo and London while also attending theater school. She took a pause from modeling after surviving a car crash in 2008.
She featured in the first two films of the Spud series, which starred a young Troye Sivan. Dean later had major roles in the horror film Don’t Sleep and the comedy Porthole. She also played the skilled assassin Syonide for eight episodes in Black Lightning.
Dean’s profile was set to skyrocket ahead of the international release of Triangle of Sadness, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year.
