Billie Eilish Hits At Body-Shamers In ‘Not My Responsibility’ Short Film

Billie Eilish released her moving short film that slams body-shaming: Not My Responsibility, on Tuesday. The singer first revealed her film on the first night of her Where Do We Go? World Tour which was postponed in March due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The film, written and produced by Eilish, spans almost four minutes. In the video, Eilish is alone in a dark room. As the clip progresses, the singer slowly takes off her clothes and submerges herself in water.

Eilish begins the film with a series of questions. “Do you know me? … Would you like me to be smaller? Weaker? Softer? Taller? Would you like me to be quiet? Do my shoulders provoke you?”

Her video hits at people who have made negative comments about the singer’s weight and clothing. Eilish is known for wearing baggy, boyish clothes to hide her figure and to avoid being shamed and sexualized.

“Some people hate what I wear, some people praise it, some people use it to shame others, some people use it to shame me, but I feel you always and nothing I do goes unseen,” Eilish says in her film.

The singer ends her video saying, “We make assumptions about people based on their size. We decide who they are. We decide what they’re worth. If I wear more, if I wear less — who decides what that makes me? What that means? Is my value based only on your perception? Or is your opinion of me not my responsibility?”
